It’s the most wonderful time of the year and it’s time to infuse our decor with dark and ghastly touches to celebrate the season. Even if you don’t want to transform your entire living space with Halloween accents, choose a table, mantel, or small area to display a dark and elegant vignette. Here, I’ve collected some of my favorite elegant looks from over the years to share with you.
Mantel & Table Scapes
Mantels are my absolute favorite thing to decorate, there are so many options, but I always start with my base of candlesticks and a mirror in the back drop. Add mesh fabrics, webs, crows, ghost pumpkins, skull details or anything that gives you that “Halloweeny” feeling.
Table settings are another fun way to get in the spirit of the holiday. Candlesticks and candelabras are a great place to start to get a big impact to compliment your place settings.
This setting from Parsimonious Decor Darling offers a great step by step guide to achieving this look or one similar.
I love the place holders in this one from Finding Home Farms with the crows and metallic mini pumpkins.
And how elegant is this beautiful Gothic Dinner Party from Kelley Nan? Just stunning! I could have this table setting every weekend.
If you just want to add some spooky touches around your house here are some fun ideas.
Creepy Crawly Bouquet
I just adore this bouquet that was originally published in Martha Stewart Living in 2010. I recreated it a couple of years ago and was pretty happy with it, but as with many of her craft projects, they never quite turn out as elegant. I strive for the perfection from her crafting staff — one day!! I chose faux flowers and used a black vase I already had. My vase was glossy, so in hindsight I think I would spray it with a matte glass paint to give it a duller look. The snakes and bugs are easy enough to find at your local party store. Try it yourself. It’s such a fun look!
Cameo White Pumpkins
I love, like really LOVE, black and white cameos, so this look really speaks to me. Combined with the ghost pumpkins, this gives such an elegant Victorian look. Propped up on the cute mini urns add to the elegance. I am definitely incorporating this into my decor this season.
Matte Black Decor
How much do we love spray paint and how it can transform just about anything these days? This matte black pumpkin is just to die for!
I love this idea of using wedding cake pillars from Wilton to create these Gothic inspired candlesticks. You can find the pillars at most party and baking supply stores. Add some matte paint and creepy candles and you have a gorgeous candlelight display.
Apothecary & Bell Jars
These jars are so popular, but they certainly have a place in this type of seasonal display. They can display all sorts of creepy accoutrements (one of my favorite nouns!) like mini and full size skulls, creepy birds, eyeballs, busts — pretty must whatever you like! Get creative, try out a few things until you get a sinister smirk on your face. Then you will know you’ve got it right!
Now that we have some great ideas for decor, it’s time to plan the menu!
Classy Cocktails & Bites
If you are hosting a cocktail party, open house, or full blown Halloween party, here are some great ideas for alcoholic bevvies from Good Housekeeping.
For appetizers, how wonderfully goulish are these deviled eggs.
For a main course this pasta dish is just divinely dark.
To curb your sweet tooth, try out some dark apples and ghostly bones.
There are just so many great ideas out there for re-purposing items around the house or to inspire your own creative projects. It’s definitely the time to get our creative juices flowing, I hope you have fun with your decor this Halloween. Stay tuned for my own decorating displays next post!
